The leafs struggles continued this week after losing to two
eastern conference opponents in the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators.
The Maple Leafs have now lost their last 6 games and go into the all star break
sitting 10 points behind the Boston Bruins in the final wild card spot. There
record also falls one game below .500 and the season is beginning to look like
a wrap and more about the potential high draft pick in this years fairly deep
draft class.
I was in attendance on Wednesday in Kanata Ontario when the
leafs took on the senators at the Canadian Tire Centre. I got to witness the
action first hand as I had first row seats right beside the leafs bench. It was
a cool experience however the leafs fell to a 3-0 deficit in the first period.
In the end the leafs made it a close game losing 4-3 with a promising effort at
the end, but it still wasn’t enough.
"I scratch my head when I talk about that first period
again," Maple Leafs interim coach Peter Horachek said. "That was
totally done by ourselves, to ourselves, to a team that played (Tuesday) night.
If the leafs want to have a chance they need to hit the
reset button after this weekends all star festivities and get the first goal on
Wednesday Night against the New Jersey Devils.
The All Star Break In
Columbus Ohio
The all star break is a time that marks just over the
half-way point of the season and the best players in the league voted by fans
around the world get to participate in a full weekend of events including the
all star game on Sunday night. Each team has at least one representative in the
event and some more than others. Phil Kessel represents the maple leafs this year,
as he is among the leagues best (despite his recent struggles) and took place
in the fastest skater competition. Ironically he was up against Tyler Seguin of
the Dallas Stars, who he was traded for back in 2009 and beat him by half a
second. Kessel also takes part in tonights all star game, so seeing him play
with other stars of the league should be interesting.
